March/April arts events celebrate spring at the University
RENO, Nev. – The School of the Arts at the University of Nevada, Reno presents world-class offerings from guest artists and performers, as well as faculty and students within the school’s departments of art, dance, music, theatre and visual arts. University program helps create jobs for people with disabilities

Polyglot Village at University to help young scholars discover language skills
RENO, Nev. – University of Nevada, Reno foreign language students who are hoping to improve their conversational fluency will have a unique opportunity Saturday, Feb. 28. The campus’ Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and the Sierra Nevada World Language Collaborative will host Polyglot Village, a program that creates a fictional, decorated town complete with shops, food, entertainment and townspeople who will only speak to students in their language of study. ... more
University stepping up efforts to help students find jobs
RENO, Nev. – As many students at the University of Nevada, Reno take more full course loads this semester, they are still taking time to attend some extra seminars and workshops that do not count toward their formal degrees. University counselors and administrators are hoping that these workshops, such as “Conducting a Job Search During Difficult Times,” and webinars like “Seven Secrets of the Hidden Job Market,” will help students, as well as alumni, find employment in challenging economic times.... more
Chemistry professor awarded prestigious Sloan Fellowship
RENO, Nev. – Liming Zhang, an assistant professor in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Science, has received a prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship for his growing potential as a research chemist. Zhang has now received two of the top national awards for young researchers, also garnering a $500,000 National Science Foundation CAREER Award last year.... more
University to honor state’s ‘Silver Scholars’
RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada, Reno is encouraging young students to stay focused on education by honoring the top 15 percent of eighth-graders academically at select middle schools throughout Nevada this spring. The “Silver Scholars” program, which features an opening awards ceremony on campus Feb. 21, both congratulates students on having top grade-point averages at their schools and provides them with tips on preparing for college throughout their high school years.... more
Remembering and learning from the Wells Earthquake
RENO, Nev. – The Wells Earthquake struck northeastern Nevada on Thursday at 6:16 a.m., February 21, 2008. It was a damaging magnitude 6 earthquake that originated about 5 miles north-northeast of Wells. It was the most damaging earthquake in Nevada since the 1954 Fallon – Dixie Valley Earthquakes and was the most major earthquake recorded by modern instruments, allowing a lot more to be learned than just a location and magnitude.... more
