Dean’s Future Scholars academic outreach program helps students gain access to higher edcuation

Celebration in University’s Honor Court to recognize area low-income, first-generation students on the path toward college 

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada, Reno’s Dean’s Future Scholars is an academic outreach program with the goal of increasing the numbers of low-income, first-generation students graduating high school and gaining access to higher education. The program’s on-campus summer program concludes tomorrow with a reception. 

Each year, approximately 50 sixth-grade Washoe County School District students are selected by their teachers to become part of the College of Education mentoring program that will follow them for the next six years and into college. The program currently mentors 345 local students in grades seven through 12 at 26 different schools throughout Washoe County.

Fifty-four incoming high school juniors and seniors in the Dean’s Future Scholars Youth College Internship Program will be recognized during the reception. These students have been involved with on-campus summer programs and enrolled in introductory college courses. 

WHAT: The Dean’s Future Scholars participants’ year-end summer celebration. 

WHO: Nearly 55 incoming high school juniors and seniors in the Dean’s Future Scholars Youth College Internship program will be recognized. The program’s newest full-time director Mariluz Garcia will be available for interviews. 

WHEN: 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15 

WHERE: University’s Honor Court, next to Morrill Hall on the south end of campus.
